A homeowner's guide to private pool care
Published 20 October 2026 · 3 min read · Crystal Clear Contractor
A private pool needs regular cleaning, water kept in balance, and its pump and filter checked before they fail. For most landed homes in Singapore that means one or two professional visits a week, with the homeowner keeping an eye on the pool in between.
What does the service cover?
- Cleaning: skimming, brushing and vacuuming, including the waterline.
- Water testing, with the chemicals dosed there and then to match the readings.
- A check on the pump and filter, with the filter backwashed when it needs it.
We supply the chemicals as part of the service, and since pool chemicals are hazardous if they are stored or measured wrongly, the dosing is best left to a trained technician.
How is a home pool different from a condo pool?
A pool at a landed home does not need an NEA licence, so there is no required monthly laboratory test or NEA submission. The testing done at each visit is the only regular check on its water.
Home pools are also smaller, and smaller pools drift out of balance faster. Singapore's heat uses up chlorine quickly and heavy rain dilutes it, so the balance can shift between visits.
When is it worth calling between visits?
- The water turns cloudy or green, or algae appears on the walls and steps.
- There is a strong chlorine smell, or the water stings the eyes.
- The pump sounds louder or different from usual.
- The water level drops noticeably between visits, which can mean a leak.
If the water keeps clouding between visits, the pool may need more frequent servicing.
Common questions
How much does it cost to maintain a home pool?
It depends on the pool's size, how often it is serviced, its features and the condition of its equipment. What determines pool maintenance cost goes through each factor.
When does the filter sand need replacing?
When backwashing no longer restores the filter's performance. Filter sand wears over time and starts letting fine particles back into the pool, which shows as cloudy water that dosing does not clear.
